Be Aware...
-
Dogs need time to adapt to their new homes. It takes at least a month to settle down and learn how to behave under the new conditions. Some dogs, like former watch dogs, have never been indoors, and will not automatically know what is expected of them, but most rescue dogs learn fast and loves no better than to please the new owner.

Every dog has an individual personality and ACE will to its best ability describe the personality of each dog before adoption. Some dogs are very timed and shy. While many dogs have been mistreated by their first owner, this is not always the reason for their shyness. The dog may miss its first owner tremendously, or it had a hard time on the street before it was picked up. In all cases, love is the best cure and in short time the most timid dog will open up and soon enjoy life in the new home.

The expression ‘you cannot read a book from its cover’ also is true for rescue dogs. Many are mongrels with an unknown lineage, so a dog may look mostly like one race, but have the behaviour of a quite different race.
-
Some dogs have diarrhoea at arrival and the first days in the new home. This is seldom caused by illness, but mostly because of change of food. When the new owner has once chosen one brand of food, keep to this brand, or change the brand slowly. The dogs have been fed on dry food at ACE.

Many asks if the dog is already house broken. Some dogs are clean from the first day while others need time. A dog can have been house broken earlier, but may have forgotten this routine during the time in the kennel, or while straying. Most important is to remember, that the dog must first learn where to do it, when to do it, and how often it is possible to do it.
