...you're my biggest friend!

Manu

We have adopted Manu already 4 years ago through your organisation and
he is a happy, healthy big dog by now. :)
He was just a tiny pup when he arrived in Duesseldorf 4 years ago and
grew into a pretty big fella by now. :)
Attached you' find some recent photos of him in his new home on the
other side of the world, in Tasmania, Australia. Two years ago we packed
our bags and moved to Australia with our two doggies (Manu and our
Collie girl Peaches) and, I have to say, Manu is now a pretty
cosmopolitan dog! ;)
He loves chasing kangaroos and birds on the beach, take a swim in the
ocean and run, run, run all the time.
Cheers from Tasmania,
Anissa Goemann

Chico ( Faruk)
Guten Morgen :-)

Susanna
We adopted our small Podenco mix Susanna about two weeks ago and I am so happy with her!!!
She is the most adorable little creature ever and adapts very well in our family. Our other two dogs, the Spanish Galgo Nube and the Dutch Kooiker Joey, accepted her well and now they are slowly becoming real friends. Susanna is still a little bit afraid of men so she is with me most of the time. Because my mother is very ill and I have to take care of her a few days per week, I take Susanna with me and she also goes very well with my mother's two small dogs. It is very nice to have her around me in those difficult times. Susanna is a real friend who is comfortable to have with me and who makes me smile every now and then.
Lots of love,
Barbara and Susanna

Albo and Magic

Dear Fabienne & co.
Once again, thank you for a wonderfull dog. Magic is doing great here in Denmark, and is getting along with everybody. He especially loves to play with Albo. It was allmost like they knew eachother from Spain, when I picked him up at the airport ? Or maybe Albo just knew the smell of your shelter ?
Magic has grown back most of his fur on his tail, and looks absolutely beautiful. He is a happy and very playfull dog, and is almost allways carrying a squeking rubber toy around in the house.
Albo, the little charmer, is also doing great. I have just bought him a pair of sunglasses, to protect his delicate alino-eyes. Now I just have to conwince Albo that he looks verry smart, and that it is good for him to wear them in the sun.
Many grateful thoughts from
Magic, Albo and Ann-marie

Romeo and Juliette

Last monday Romeo finally arrived in the airport in Copenhagen. Juliette was ofcourse waiting there wtih her fostermum Tanja.
Romeo came out of the box wagging his tail. He went straight over to Juliette and was obviously very happy to see her again.
He's very happy in his family, Romeo. And so is Juliette. And they will stay together always.
They fostermum Tanja has now decided to adopt both these lovely galgos.
I will make the contracts and so forth. Tanja lives not far from me and I have seen the dogs a couple of times already. Juliette has put on a lot of weight and is looking much better. Her tail and skin has healed. Romeo looked good upon his arrival. Well fed and in the best possible mood. Now, all is good for those two
That's a happy ending!!

Ilka

During my visit in Spain in September where I was picking up 3 galgos and a podenco for waiting families in Denmark, I visited 2 shelters for abandoned dogs.

Upon my arrival I drove to visit ACE’s shelter and to meet Fabienne. An infernal noise began as we entered the shelter. All the dogs were very excited about the visit and they were all eagerly trying

to stand as close to the bars as possible – the bars that separate them from us.

All the dogs at the shelter were in desperate need of a safe place to live with people who’d take care of them and love them.

All the dogs were kind, friendly and desperately seeking our attention.

It has a huge impact on an animal-friend to see so many dogs gathered in one place; all have they been judged invalid and unimportant by the people who used to own them. Perhaps because the dog became sick, perhaps because he grew old or perhaps because he’s no longer a cute little puppy – or maybe because he’s just one more of many puppies.

In the middle of the noise and the disturbance stood Ilka. Quietly waiting she watched us. Without any sparkle in her eyes and on weak hind legs and her fur all scruffy, she sent me a glance that made tears come to my eyes.

During the years I have met many dogs that have told their sad stories – not with words that humans understand, but their tails, their attitude and the sad looking eyes have said more than a thousand words.

In a few seconds I experienced how Ilka told me about a long life without kindness from anybody. And as she, although she was afraid of people she didn’t know, on her weak legs came to the bars and put her head into my hands there was no way back. While we stood there, Ilka and I, she started growling. My colleague had arrived and Ilka told him, that she didn’t like men.

Fabienne asked if I wanted to go into Ilka’s yard. I thanked her no. Had I gone in, I most probably would have stayed.

When I left Ilka I didn’t look back. The meeting with her had taken its toll and like a true cry-baby I continued my journey along with my colleague. I knew I had to have Ilka. Under normal circumstances I’m an honest person but now, I tried in a thousand different ways to convince my colleague to smuggle Ilka in a pocket, in the bottom of a bag or just anything. I didn’t care how. My colleague however could not be convinced to do so.

Honesty is the best policy and so we drove on to meet more unfortunate dogs in another shelter.

I did actually try to convince my colleague several times during our stay to go back to get Ilka.

But when we left Spain it was without her.

A couple of days later, having driven all night in the mountains and on motorways, waited in the airport,  and having flown for hours, we arrived in Denmark with lovely dogs, to find my car ripped apart by somebody who’d tried to steal it. After a long drive home with a tow truck I finally arrived at my house. I immediately wrote a mail to Fabienne asking her permission to adopt Ilka. The permission came quickly. When Ilka would be ready to travel was an open question. Her estimated age was 7. She could be 7 and she could be a 100 years old. I didn’t know and it didn’t matter. For sure she was worn and used. And most definitely she had never experienced a good and safe life along with people who cared for her. And it was obvious that she had given birth to a lot of puppies.

What was also obvious to me was, that for this dog I needed to make a difference. In the middle of the noise and despite her fright for people she showed me great trust by putting her head into my hands.

Without knowing so our meeting meant, that Ilka put her life in my hands.

The nights start to get colder in Spain in September. And for Ilka there’s no possibility of sleeping indoors. Before it got any colder, she had to come home.

And Ilka, my Portuguese podenco left the shelter some weeks later. The shelter that up until the day I picked her up is the only place where she has experienced kindness from humans.

Thank you all so much for Ilka, thank you all for the fantastic work that you do for the unfortunate dogs and cats every day, all year round. I feel very lucky for having met you.

You are all so special!

Albo
Thank you for saving this wonderful little dog. Albo is doing great here in Denmark, he has moved into my house without any problems (except that he thinks the toilet is indoor, but we are working on that).
He is doing great with my other dogs, cats and people, and there is nothing shy or quiet about this little guy anymore.
I'm sending you some pictures of Albo and his best friend, Nora, performing their evening ritual in my bed, they love to play a bit, before going to sleep.
I allways throw threats on the floors, whwn I am leaving the house, and that scared Albo, in the beginning. I guess he thought that I was throwing something after him. But now he loves to search for threats with my other dogs. And feels safe about everything that I do.
We are all looking forwards to give Magic a god home, and allmost can't wait any longer !
Albo is going with me to the airport, to pick up Magic, and show him that there is nothing to be afraid of.
Thank you for all your hard work !!
Many grateful thoughts from

He loves our other dog madge who is 14 and she seems to tolerate his playful behaviour. Thank you so much for letting us adopt him.

Holly (Mousy)

We adopted 'Holly' from your refugio on 27th November. She was known to you as Mousy.
Holly came to us with an eye problem which made her squint and keep her eyes closed most of the time. We took her to our own vet to be registered we discovered that Holly had in fact been poked in her eyes with a sharp object which had caused a hole in each of her eyes. She is taking pain relief tablets and eye drops 4 times a day. After just one week the vet has remarked how well she is doing and her eyes are improving slowly. She can now open them and does have some sight.
Holly has settled in very well and is a pleasure to have. Although she is nervous and cowers if you move too quickly when you are near to her, she gets on well with everyone, including children and other dogs. We have had her clipped to remove her matted coat so have had to buy her a couple of coats to keep her warm.
Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to love and care for Holly. We love her dearly and feel sorry for whoever decided that they no longer wanted to own her as she is just so sweet.
Regards

Philipp (Jaro)

Lolita

Here is a mail from the first 12 hours in Lita´s (ex-Lolita) new life since we came home to Eskilstuna. The trip from Arlanda airport went very well. She accepts her home like a queen and waves her tail all the time.
Not even when we washed her she went angry, She is always so kind and friendly. She was a little bit upset when she saw the computer and the "moving" things on the screen, but today she doesn´t seem to mind. Will be exciting to see how she reacts on the TV!
She is very curious and wants to jump on all the furniture (like a kangaroo). The dinner table is especially interesting when there´s food on it. She begins to understand the word "No" now. She likes the toys we have bought for her, she is very playful too. Thanks for such a sweet dog.

Spot

Hello to everyone at ACE. Just a note to update you with our dear girl’s progress. Spot Flew into our lives direct from Malaga on 23rd October and to be honest – she feels like she has been with us forever.

She is a lovely dog with a big heart and she seems to be enjoying life here in Drunen. She gets on very well with our other dog Caspar and they are inseperable now. The kids adore her because she is so playful – even though she steals soft toys and puts them in her basket – we think she thinks they are her puppies. Everything is new – especially leaves falling from the trees – its fascinating for her – we don’t think she has seen this before. Regardless of all the changes in her life recently, Spot is settling nicely into a new rhythm of life – one with plenty of nice walks, lots of cuddles and new friends. We are very lucky to have found her.

Thanks to everyone at ACE for looking after her so well and for the great work you do. With lots of love and ‘een dikke poot’. From the Dotty Dalmation lovers in Drunen.

Ray

Trudy

Trudy is a delightful dog and we get on well. She does have some behavioural problems due, I believe, to ill treatment in her past but nothing too serious. As you can see her coat is very slowly growing back and by the time it is fully back will no doubt have to have it all cut off again! I usually have them done every spring so they don’t get knotted up with seeds and of course so I can spot the dreaded ticks – altho’ they also have their new Scalibor collars at that time also.

Anyway all the best to you all at ACE .You do great work and I am very grateful that you were there for Trudy.

Very Best Wishes Michele, Torrox, Spain

Dot & Mary

We are the very proud owners of Dot and Mary. We would like to thank you for taking care of them during their stay in Spain, we are sure that they were in good hands.
We never get bored with them. They play all day long with each other and like to dig in the ground. We never have to empty our garbage can anymore, they do it in our place, so when we get home from work we find a kitchen full of trash. Eventhough, we have a lot of fun with them and they already can sit on command. They also listen very well to their own name. It is very strange to see them looking at the TV when somebody speaks spanish.
Untill now we haven't got any regrets of taking them in our family!
We wish you a lot of succes with the other dogs and respect your work very much!!!!
In the future we will sent you other nice pictures of Dot and Mary so you also can see them grow.

P.S. When you see a picture of mary, she just took a swim in a pond with very dirty water.

I am sending you this picture of Luka, doesn't he look handsome. I feel very sad for his previous owner because after having Luka for 5 weeks I realise that nobody could have parted with him unless they really had no other choice.  He is a wonderful dog. Funny, affectionate playful obedient and very very kind. He wants only to be at our side all the time.

Do I sound in love? well that is because I am.  I am so glad that I looked on your website that day.  Luka settled in so well and is great pals with our other young water dog 'Mitch'.  They play together, chase balls and "wild life" At the beach they dig massive holes and yap and run and swim all the time they are just filled with joy. They love to swim in our pool and sit by the gate waiting to be let in. These dogs fill our lives with joy. I just wish that all dogs could have such a happy life.

Tarrak (Roman)

It was love at first sight when Peter met Malte/Roman who now will have a third name :) Peter will call him Tarrak because he thinks it´s a beautiful name on a handsome guy.
Malte/Roman/Tarrak was first a little bit shy; "where am I?" but when Peter took him out for a pee and then came back into the terminal it was a different dog. Now he was happy and playful...  and hungry. He found Carina´s bag with meat balls :)
Peter was very pleased with the dog, in his eyes it was the most beautiful dog in the world.

Trudy

All is going well here and Trudy is settling in fine. Trudy has been for her “shampoo and set” but it ended up being a short, back and sides! Poor love has lost all her long coat but there were too many tangles to keep it and it’ll grow soon anyway. She’s also had her ears cleaned and has been wormed so it’s been a busy week for her. She is still a bit clingy and doesn’t let me out of sight yet but I am sure as soon as she realises she is home for good she’ll gain more confidence. Thanks again for your help. I would just like to say that your website is superb. It was certainly instrumental in getting Trudy and I together. I won’t forget about the photos. I’ll wait until her hair grows a little tho’!
Best Wishes, Michele

Ronja

Thank you very much for all love and care you have given Ronja! She is, as you know, a beautiful creature. After living on the streets her personality could have been destroyed, as well as her trust in people but.. it?s not! We love her so much.. Thank you!!
She has an amazing patience with children, she is so calm and children are therefore very respectful! She adores cats, a little bit to much if my parents cat would decide!
When she first came to us she was affectionate but careful of course. Usually walking behind you in the apartment, very easy to fall over on :-) VERY social! After a week or two she sometimes let us out of sight in the apartment but not for long.
Walking in a leach wasn?t her number one thing, she?s much better in that now! She loves running after reindeer and moose and we plan to participate in a course, learning some obedience and teaching techniques.

She usually never barks but in the beginning she could bark her head off at horses! Those scary creatures:-) Trying to change this behaviour we took long walks with horses, and now she is not scared at all:-) Something that we haven?t succeded in is to make her calm when people are shooting a gun close or far away. She still shivers whenever she hears such a noise, poor darling..
We realised pretty soon that she is interested in water but she could definitely NOT swim.. She wants to go in but is trying to walk ON the water surface as far as possible! Amusing the whole beach:-) After a lot of training with safety west her swimming was that much improved that we could go out sailing! She prefer having land close but accept the situation of course. We went out for only two hours the first trip. Running in the water with Henrik, chasing sticks is something that she really enjoys!

Something else that she has brought to her heart is the sauna. She sits there with us in the 75 degrees celcius and then run out in the cold water with us, over and over, all night.. When we are tired of the heat she walks into the sauna herself and stays till its time for bed. It?s very clear she is spanish and used to heat but this behaviour resembles more like what a Finnish dog would do!! :-)

Ronja has charmed all our family and friends, they all want a dog like her! Of course we know there is only one to find!! :-)
Keep up the good work, take good care!
Love / Ronja, Henrik and Hanna

Alfee (Plucheke)

Hello to you all.
I thought that I would let you know how I have been since being with my new mum and dad.
I came into the refugio and no-one knew what sort of dog I was because I was so matted - I could not even see through all of the fur on my face.  I didn't even know what breed I was!  Then the kind people at the refugio gave me a haircut and discoved that underneath all the fur was a toy poodle. They gave me a new and a lovely foster home where I was treated really well by Auntie Manja.  I was soon adopted and now live in Caleta de Velez with my new mum and dad, 2 dogs and 6 cats!  Life is great now.  I have had a proper poodle haircut and have seen my paws and face for the first time in ages.  I am rather a handsome little fella if I say so myself and look very posh.  I am now called Alfee and love my new life.  I have sent photos of my 'makeover'!
Being 'dumped' at the refugio was the best thing that has ever happened to me.
I must go now to play with my toys!
Love and snuffles

Chocolat (Bola)
Here is my lucky story… I was born on August 10 2006; I was found in the wild nature and brought to the Malaga shelter.  But, as my survival chances were very poor there, luckily Fabienne took me to the Refugio where I could wait for someone to adopt me, and it did not take very long.  I looked like a little ball of hair and I was named Bola.
On November 15 I had my first trip in a plane and flew to Brussels with 14 other dogs.  Unfortunately we had 3 long hours delay.  Amongst the 15 dogs I was the only one who was not afraid and who really enjoyed the trip !!  My mum recognized me immediately when I came through the arrival gate at the Zaventem airport.  And then we drove to my new home… And I loved it, I landed in Paradise !! :o))
I have now grown up, I am 11 months old, I have become a big boy, my name is now Chocolat.  I am a bomb of energy, always in a good mood, I love every person and every animal, I am very curious of everything, I am a real kissing machine and I love to have long walks and play in my garden with my favorite toy :  THE chicken ! (see attached picture) :o)  Am I cute or what ?
Could you please put me on your internet site together with the other Happy Endings so that I can show to everyone how happy I am ? Thank you !!!

After fostering puppies for the last couple of years its wonderful to have her here and know that she is not going anywhere. As foster parents you are always waiting for the phone call to take them to the airport but we are pleased that this time that wont be happening .She is very special to us and brings us allot of joy and happiness.

Lucky (Willow)

Verspätung in Frankfurt an. So süß!!!Sein leichter Überbiss macht ihn einzigartig.Elisabeth gab Lucky gleich in Lukas Arme.Lucky akzeptierte uns sofort.
Ganz liebe Grüße Stefanie, Lukas & Lucky ("wuff")

Diva (Zara)

Diva, a 3 yrs old Great Dane, was found wandering on the streets, Emma from the Shelter in Granada saved her and when I received her email I fell in love immediately. Diva, then called Zara, had Leishmania, high leveled. She was treated with injections in Granada, after that treatment was finished she came to our home, initially to only foster her until she found a new home. But, you already see it coming,  then we decided to adopt her...She is still being treated against Leishmania with Alopurinol tablets, she already gained a bit of weight, her hair is more shiny, and she feels good. The other 5 dogs accepted her, after a difficult start, because she is quite dominant, a real Diva! She found herself an equal playmate in Sultan, our other Dane, a 94 cm high male, who therefore can be the boss! Aren´t they a beautiful couple? Don´t let Leishmania withhold you from adopting a dog! If the treatment starts on time, with the right dosis, there´s a big chance the dog will grow old. A shelterdog often is a very grateful dog. In this case: GREATful !

Oscar & Ziggy

We promised to send an update about our two new additions to our life in Spain. At the start of April we collected two puppies, now called Oscar and Ziggy. Ziggy was laid back from the start but all feet and ribs. Oscar was frightened of his own shadow so.....we started the 'welcome to the family' bit. After only 6 weeks and no damage other than a few wet tiles in the house to two dogs have realized that the cat, we rescued prior to them arriving, rules the home, the couch is reserved for them, barking at anything that comes near the house is fun and waking everyone up at 6am gets them a drive in the car and an hours walk. We have always owned dogs but these two have their own agenda and to be honest we love them. Here are a few pictures of the pair of them with Figo the cat. Thanks for the opportunity to adopt these two and good luck for the future placements.

Max (Axel)

This is our dog Max (Axel). We got max from Malaga since may 2006, today he is one year with us!!
He's a very happy dog, his nickname is bear 'cause he's sooo big! He walks with u all the time specially in front of your feet...He had 3 eye operations now but it's going to be okay with him!
I just want to thank u and the organisation for this great dog!
The picture with Max and the jacket was just for the show, Max doesn´t like water and rain, when it's raining and we must go out then he runs to this jacket and wants to put it on, when it's on he wants to go out.... It's a crazy dog!
Go on with your job!!
Many thanks, greetings, Dymphy & Max

Pelle (Suerte)

Luna

Hallo, I am Luna, a 9 month old Alsation Puppy. Ich was found by the Police in Malaga and brought into the Dogs Home. I was abandoned, because my family did not want me anymore. But then, a nice lady from Northern Spain called Tanja Heinen found me on the website and fell in love with me and wanted to adopt me. Tanja and her husband drove all the way down from Terragona in Northern Spain to Andalucia in Southern Spain, approximately 1000km, to collect me. This lovely new family suddenly stood outside my Kennel and took me for a a walk, I could hardly believe my luck,we went into the countryside,  I explored  a thousand different smells, it was heavenly. Then I had to climb into the car and we drove for a long time, I was very excited, every time we stopped to do a pipi, the rest of the time I slept. After a very long drive we arrived  at a very big garden and house and they let me have a good sniff around. I can tell you there was a lot to explore. After that I was given a big meal, because I was very hungry and collapsed on a huge soft blanket on the floor with some toys, it was heavenly.
After a few days I felt quite at home and started to excercise my rights, so I thought, but my family were not all that pleased and I had to alter my ways and please them. I can now walk to heel, but sometimes I try and run too fast, because there is always something to distract me. I have also learned to sit and sometimes when I feel like it to lie down, because I found that if I obey, I am given a treat, so it is really worth trying to please them.I often have to think about my friends in the Refugio I left behind and onder how they are and if they too have found a wonderful home like me, I am the luckiest dog in the world.

Lee

This is a picture of our Lee. He arrived at Zaventem Airport September 2nd.
It really is a great dog. My family has been through a lot the last year, like the death of my grandfather, my father and our beloved dog Benji.
All the love Lee brought into our lives can’t make us forget our loss, but when we look into Lee’s face and we see what a brave and beautiful dog he is and how much faith he has in us and how much he can enjoy little things, it is clear he is really showing us how beautiful life can be.
We really love him and he fills a special place in our family.
Regards,
Monique, owner of Lee,
my friend Fred
and my mother Bennie and brother Hennie how take care of Lee in a great way and play with him when I have to work.
