Our Malaga Dogs...
Several dogs in the Malaga pound have Leishmania. Those dogs need medication but in most cases there is no money for it or no time to treat the dogs properly. The only solution would be to euthanise those dogs as soon as the LM surfaces. But if a dog with LM is adopted, the new family could succesfully have the dog treated against it and the dog could live a happy life. In The Netherlands for instance the Allopurinol pills are not really expensive. The dog needs to take these pills for the rest of its life. But the dog needs to be tested on a regular basis and especially the kidneys need to be checked quite often. Sometimes special nutrition is necessary and in some cases the dog needs Glucantime (injections), which is a lot more expensive than the pills. We put the LM dogs on our website and we hope there are people with big hearts that will adopt one of those dogs, but we have to mention that we cannot offer financial support.
Since March A.C.E. has aquired a small area in the back of the Malaga pound where we can put the dogs that we want to save in Malaga. We now have about 10 dogs sitting in that area. The dogs will be seperated from the other dogs, and will be prepared with the following:
- Vaccination
- Rabies
- CHIP
- Bloodtest
If possible the males will be castrated. The females can not be spayed in Malaga unless we bring them to the Refugio first and ask our vet. The Malaga veterinarian can not sterilize the females because of the large number of dogs housed there.
Older females need to be sterilized in a private clinic, to have better chances to recover. This causes an additional cost of 100 Euro which will be charged when the dog is adopted.
The Malaga pound is a very sad place. Currently there are about 750 dogs waiting to find homes. If someone wants to adopt a dog from the Malage pound you must first know this:
